Normally I don’t talk politics here, but because this directly affects education and it would be criminal not to use this platform:

If you’re in the U. S. and you have any interest in ever pursuing higher education or just not making it impossible for other people to do that, consider calling your reps and telling them you oppose Section 117(d) of H.R.1 (Tax Cuts and Jobs Act)

  1. Here’s the bill itself
  2. Here’s an explanation of how this bill will affect education
  3. Here’s another, and another
  4. Here’s an even simpler explanation
  5. Here’s how to find your reps in the House and the Senate
  6. Here’s a sample call script if you’re not sure what to say

And if you’re not in the U. S., consider signal boosting this for your followers, because a lot of us will be financially crippled if this thing passes

Education is (1) important and (2) already absurdly expensive in the United States. Please call your reps. You probably won’t even have to talk to a real person. You can leave a message.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR CALLING YOUR CONGRESSIONAL RESPRESENTATIVES

1) It MUST be your representative. If you do not live in their district they will not listen to you and they may not even take your call. If you call a rep and tell them you are not from the district YOUR MESSAGE WILL END UP IN THE TRASH

2) Be prepared to give them your name and address. This is the only way they will know you are from the district and thus are worthy of talking to. You will not go on a list or anything like that but the data management systems we use need that information. Your zipcode is most important but the first time you call you will probs need a full address.

3) Please be brief and PLEASE be nice. Your call will be answered by an intern or staff assistant who has nothing to do with policy. We get that you’re pissed and we probably are too but we are not getting paid much if anything and we have no influence on policy. A nice caller is a lovely break and a particularly nasty caller may find their message “gets lost” before it can go in the system.

Happy phoning!
