I have no idea how this went over my head every single other time I’ve watched this show, but I JUST REALIZED for the first time how significant it is that the moment Flint wakes up the morning after he arrives at Miranda’s house in episode 1×03, the first thing he does is LOOK INTO A DIRTY, SMUDGED MIRROR IN WHICH HE CANNOT CLEARLY SEE HIS REFLECTION.
[SIRENS] !!!!!!
as viewers, we have just met Miranda, and Flint’s relationship with her is still very unclear to us (and will remain so for some time). so watching this as a BS newbie, this little moment probably wouldn’t mean much or stand out in any significant way. but retrospectively, it makes SO MUCH SENSE that Flint (who has been out at sea for some time, dealing with Singleton, dealing with Gates’ disbelief and exasperation, trying to get his damn page, barely holding on to his captaincy, and fully embodying Captain Flint™) would come back to this liminal outside place, where he takes a break from the rest of the world with the woman he has known for over a decade, and suddenly NOT KNOW WHO EXACTLY HE IS. is he Flint?! is he McGraw?! who is he, and how does he quickly transition into the person he needs to be/is meant to be in this house?! HE DOESN’T KNOW. THE MIRROR DOESN’T KNOW. NOBODY KNOWS!!!
and ~I wonder~ if we’re going to see someone struggling to see their reflection in a dirty mirror while in the midst of an identity crisis later on…*COUGHS LOUDLY*…
in conclusion: a) I cannot BELIEEEEEEEVE I never put these two moments together before!!! why did nobody hit me over the head with one of flint’s particularly large volumes?! b) I am very incredibly extremely sad c) further proof that these grumpy ginger kittens who have been through hell need to BECOME BFFS POST HASTE
