I really think that, at the end of the day, the greatest accomplishment of Black Sails is making us love Thomas Hamilton as much as we do.
I mean, for every other character and every other story they had 4 season to tell it, to develop it, to move it forward, to make us enjoy it – to simply tell it.
But with Thomas?
They gave us 5 episodes of flashbacks in season 2, after we knew his fate (or we thought we knew) and just some name drop here and then
(we get so few mentions of his name, like saying Thomas name would bring his ghost -and everytime it happened the show has been so careful with it.)
And in those 5 episodes they had to a)explain what basically started the main plot of the show b)explain why Flint is so hellbent in going against england and civilization c)making us care enough about Thomas to emphatize with Flint d)make us care enough about Thomas that bringing him back would feel the right thing to do.
And they fucking accomplished all of it!
I always joked how I was ready to go against Englad for Thomas’ sake too. How Thomas’ name was sacred and how some people shouldn’t be allowed to say it (yes, I am talking about Rogers and using Thomas’ name as opening line in the conversation with Flint.)And look I saw all of us after the possibility of Thomas being alive was thrown at us. I saw how we spent the week after that waiting and wanting an aswer. (Hell, I personally spent all the finale wanting and waiting, I cared more about it than anything else.)
Thomas was always supposed to be one of the most important characters and the fact that they made him such with just so little time shows us how good at telling are story the writers are.
