Why, yes, me, I would love to do that. I totally did not come up with all of these in the middle of the night yesterday. No, it was not at 2AM at all. Anyway, I realised that I could literally talk for hours about each and every line these two (Silver and Flint) asshats exchanged in s2 and s3, so I will. Even though no one asked for it. [someone sAVE ME]
So. I’ve just realised something thinking about Billy telling Silver that Flint doesn’t see him as an equal, that he doesn’t respect him. That line has always bothered me so much and I couldn’t really figure out why (apart from “noooooooo”), but then I looked at a gif of Flint looking at Silver establishing himself in front of the crew in s2 and I realised… Flint absolutely thinks Silver is his equal. He absolutely respects him, he respected him way before their shark date. He respected him when he charmed his way into the hearts of the entire crew. He respected him when he held his ground and lost a leg for it, saving the whole crew and the ship. He respected him way back when John remembered the whole fucking schedule and then burned it to be safe. He respected him when he spoke Spanish to that captain of the warship. He respected him when he saved his neck two times in a row when he absolutely didn’t have to!! He respected him when the whole fucking crew unanimously voted him their quartermaster. John Silver didn’t need to establish himself as Flint’s equal, he didn’t need to gain Flint’s respect. He already had that.
But. He did lose it for a while because of a little something called tHE URCA MOTHERFUCKING GOLD. YES. Ok, so, until now I’ve been leaning more towards the “Flint didn’t know about the gold before” theory, but now I am fully aboard the “Flint totally knew before” train. Or ship. Listen,
you can see the change in Flint in the last few minutes of s2 when Silver tells him about the gold. I now don’t think that he buys it for a second. Flint knew in 210. Look at John, seriously look at him. He looks like the guiltiest motherfucker on this Earth. And his story is not believable whatsoever. And you can see the change in Flint, he becomes so angry and disappointed… when a minute ago he was all smilley. This isn’t just about the gold. This is about Silver betraying him. HIM. And that’s why the start of s3 is as cold as it is. The scene where Flint nearly brings Silver to tears by his little speech about “the fools and the pretenders" is pure passive aggressiveness. He’s waiting for Silver to tell him the truth. He’s mad and he’s sulking. And when John finally tells him… oh boy.
Flint flipped the switch so quickly in 210. And like, I would understand him being standoffish and cold-hearted towards everyone in s3 because he is in mourning and in the middle of a killing spree in the name of Miranda Barlow, but… in 210, he wasn’t about to be that way with Silver. He was so sweet and caring to him, he handed him the water and smiled at him and told him how much they all need him. He only started to act like the “angry scary man” again after Silver told him about the gold. And tbh how could Flint not see the holes in Silver’s story?? Oh, you’re telling me this man in his last moments decided to share this info with you? He decided to tell you how he betrayed us all? And you’re the only one who heard that? And you’re the only one who heard the first story from him and the other guy? And both of the guys who were telling it are dead now? How convenient. Also, you’re the only one with a strong enough connection to Jack through Max. Interesting. But you’re telling me that “he” betrayed us all? Ok. Not to mention Silver’s pained guilty expression. Flint had to now in that moment. That’s why he flipped the switch so quickly and started talking in such an angry voice immediately after having the sweetest moment with Silver.
And then in s3 he continued to be coarse to Silver. Even though in 210, before John told him about the gold, he was ready to be nice to him, he was ready to let John warm his way into his heart too. In 301, “suddenly”, he says shit like In my head, you’re not welcomed. Because John betrayed his trust! And then Flint continues with
But the fools and the pretenders… they were never truly among us to begin with. He says this deliberately to hurt John, to show him how much trust and respect he’s losing by lying to him about the gold. You can see it in that longboat. Flint isn’t even fucking surprised when Silver tells him the truth. He just keeps rowing. He knew. He was waiting for Silver to finally say it thinking that he would then decide what to do about it. And Silver’s confession was sufficient to Flint, it was good enough to let the whole matter go. And so they did. But do you know why it was sufficient??
Well, let me break my own heart once again. Silver wouldn’t have gained Flint’s trust again had he just told him the truth about the gold. No, but he told him the truth and also told him a very personal feeling. He shared with Flint one of the most personal thoughts he had about himself. A doubt, a pain, a weak spot. Without these men, all I am is an invalid. He never shares these feelings with anyone. Not with the crew. Not with Billy. Not with Madi. This, only Flint knows. And that’s why after that longboat shark date, he trusts Silver again and forgives him for lying and gets over it. And this just gets me so much, gOD!!
I wasn’t ready for him aka I wasn’t ready for the emotional depth he possesses. I was not ready for saving him all the time, not only from all the people who want to kill him, but also from himself. I wasn’t prepared to care. I wasn’t prepared to fall in love with this man. To know him inside out and to understand him like very few did before. I was not ready for that. I was not ready for him understand me either. I wasn’t expecting him to be the only person I could confide in, the only one with whom I could share my deepest darkest thoughts and fears. Honestly, John you try so hard to tell everyone how much you don’t care about Flint when in reality all you ever do is care about Flint. Get a life, sON.
//Side note: I wonder if Silver knows he had Flint’s respect way before he admitted to “stealing” the gold. I hope he knows that Flint doesn’t respect him for lying to him and for fooling him (because he didn’t really fool him anyway, you know), but more so for being able to get his way without violence and with wits (and a big mouth, yeah) only. Flint admires Silver for being so resourceful, because there were situations in his life from which he had no way of getting out. But Silver would get out. Flint eventually learned to fight his way out of most situations… and don’t get me wrong, he can fight not only with his sword but with his words as well, we all saw that. He’s very intelligent and VERY good at manipulation and also can talk his way out of a lot. But not the way John can. Flint could never talk his way out of every single bad situation that he found himself in. But Silver could. And he borrowed some of that outrageous inventiveness to Flint more than once by persuading him to keep going and not give up. When Flint killed Gates, when Flint wanted to sacrifice himself on the Maroon Island. So, Flint doesn’t respect Silver for outsmarting him by betraying him, he respects him for outsmarting him by saving him.
