penflicks:

Thomas has been tortured and kept as a slave for 10 years. In the reunion scene his eyes looked dulled and his face lacked the sharpness that his mind used to give it. Does he remember how to talk properly? Can he still construct arguments? Or does he keep his head low and desperately try and remember the names of those who once loved him. Does he remember James and Miranda’s names? Could he describe them after so long? Does he believe they stopped loving him and were happy to let him rot?

ok, but imagine Thomas getting James back and with him some trace of who he was. Imagine Thomas feeling as if he can breathe again even just a little bit and on inhaling remembering how to be angry. Thomas remembering that this isn’t his home, this isn’t his life, and James deserves better than this hell – that Thomas himself deserves better than this. Imagine James seeing Thomas start to curl in on himself, start to withdraw again – and then look to James and uncurl, straighten his spine, and take a step toward an overseer that’s about to hurt someone and catch his arm in midswing and that’s how the rebellion on the plantation begins – with Thomas Hamilton remembering who he used to be and deciding consciously to try to be that man again.
