Tagged by Laura @iwtv2007. Thanks, darling!

Last movie I watched: Guardians of the Galaxy 2, which made me give half a crap about at least one character before he died. Also I totally called the big twist two seconds in.

Last song I listened to: Down Among the Dead Men (yes, the one from Assassin’s Creed Black Flag, it’s on my Charles Vane playlist, don’t judge me)

Last book I read: Um… I honestly do not recall, I feel like it was possibly something by Seanan McGuire.

Last thing I ate: fried chicken

Where would you want to time travel to: Well, if we assume that I suddenly don’t need any of my medications – no, I still don’t want to go backwards in time really. Nasty place. Let’s try forwards – say, to a time when the world isn’t teeming with misogyny and the various other ills that make going backward a bad idea

Fictional character I would hang out with for a day: Madi Scott. She’s well-read, incredibly smart, and understands the value of silence as much as talking

If I could be anywhere right now, where would I be: Anywhere? idk, I’d probably hop a plane to somewhere like… Ireland, maybe, or Scotland, get a hotel room, and sleep for a week where no one knows where I am. It’s always tempting this time of year. Or maybe somewhere like Prague? Amsterdam? Marrakesh? Get further afield? Not this continent, I know that.

Current fandom obsession: Black Sails. Still. Probably for the rest of forever. I’ve got so much to write.

Cite the final line of five of your fics – your favorites, or the most recent ones. Tag five writers who should do this next.

I was tagged by my darling @iwtv2007. Thank you!

1. Hennessey quietly made a note to himself to see to the lad’s clothing and at least attempt some form of gift. A trunk of his own, perhaps. After all – he could hardly stow away in Hennessey’s on the ride back to the ship. – Good Fortune Attend

2. “Good riddance, you English bastard,” he murmurs. “And may the Devil himself strike me down if I raise my hand to help you.”He would swear by God, but then paybacks, as they say, are Hell. – The Anger of a Gentle Man

3. She nods. She’s exactly where she belongs, now – here, on this ship, with James, and perhaps that’s all she truly needs to begin setting things to rights. – Hell Hath No Fury

4. London, Thomas thinks, might be terrible, but Nassau -Nassau has the people he loves best in the world and all the sunlight they could ever want. – How Will I Know Thee

5. “Persuade me,” he purred, and Thomas’ eyes widened and then raked over James’ form, and when he spoke, his voice was low and husky.“Oh, I intend to.” – Persuasion

Tagging whoever wants as I think most of the writers I know have already done this.

What I recall of you as a writer: empowering your characters, Miranda, showing them other sides unbeknown to themselves, Thomas, and portraying them with honesty and accuracy, Vane and Flint. They That Sow The Wind. I loved it! I hated it! I enjoyed it! <3

Thank you so much! I’m so, so glad you like my character portrayals, as I do spend a truly ridiculous amount of time trying to get into everyone’s head before I put them to paper and I’m glad they come across so true to form!

Five things meme

Being that I’m part of the Black Sails fandom, I was tagged by Laura (@iwtv2007). Thanks!

Five things you’ll find in my bag:

my phone, my house keys which are on kind of a cluster of differently colored pig keychains. I call them the pig keys even though there’s also a turtle on there. my wallet, a notebook, and a mini first-aid kit

Five things in my bedroom:

A longbow (which I need to remember to oil soon), the arrows that go with it, a shitton of books, a Carnivale mask, and a statue of Cernunnos

Five things I’ve always wanted to do in life:

I’m… really bad at setting goals for myself beyond “keep my head above water and keep my bills paid” but if I had to set some – I’d like to travel. I’d like to get the hell out of this country and see Europe – France, Prague, Italy, Spain, Vienna, and then travel further south and get to the Middle East. At some point I’d like to actually kiss someone. I want to have a proper library, not just a room meant for other things that happens to have a lot of books in it. I’d like to get drunk – actually drunk, not just buzzed, just to know what it feels like (look don’t judge me I was… not adventurous when I was younger. At all). I… have absolutely no idea what my fifth goal would be. None at all. Ideas, folks?

Five things that make me happy:

Spaghetti, my cats purring at me, owls hooting in the distance on a clear night, sunny days, comments on my fics

Five things people may not know about me:

I have a niece and three nephews. I was in the choir at my high school. I didn’t learn to drive until I was 22. I have freckles. I’m a really light sleeper.

4) favorite character you’ve written 5) character you were most surprised to end up writing 16) are there any characters who haunt you? For the ask the writer. (Sorry it’s so late.)

ooh, thank you! *flexes fingers*

4. The favorite character is a tough one, as I’m torn between the ones that come flowing off my fingers without any real effort at all and the ones that drive me right round the twist but are complicated and take effort. In the end, I’d have to say that I have several, starting with Miranda and Thomas Hamilton, who are always a delight to write, but I have a definite soft spot for Admiral Hennessey, with his sort of exasperated fondness and utter bullheadedness to rival Flint’s under the right circumstances.

5. I had absolutely no idea I was going to end up writing Abigail into To the Upper Air. She wasn’t part of the plan except in a peripheral sense, and then she just kind of showed up and started doing her own thing much to my surprise. Similarly I was not expecting to end up writing anything from Hornigold’s perspective, ever, and yet there he is in Chapter 6 of They That Sow the Wind, providing eyes on a scene. The same is true for Woodes Rogers in Anger of a Gentle Man – I really don’t like him as a person (although he’s growing on me a bit in Season 4), so having him be part of a scene at all was kind of weird.

16. Hmm. Characters that haunt me. Are we talking characters that stand at the edge of my consciousness, stories cut too short, demanding to know why I don’t write more about them, why canon treated them the way it did? Because the answer to that is Miranda Hamilton and, to a lesser degree, Thomas, mostly because he’s far too considerate to spend too much time demanding anything. Ask me about him and his haunting habits again when I finally get to writing a Whitechapel crossover, as I’m going to end up doing at some point. Miranda, though – gods, if anyone were ever going to leave an angry, disruptive, very heart-rending ghost it would be her. The version of her that lives in my head is so very, very upset a lot of the time, and I keep trying to write her a solution to her troubles. It’s odd, because there are so very many characters I’ve been fond of that deserved better from canon and yet she’s the one that won’t be placated, at least not yet.
