Inspired by @captain-flint’s tags about that brown coat on the Flint x coats gifset (can’t link as I’m on my phone)
It seemed it had taken no time at all to change their clothes and pack a bag of belongings they felt were irreplaceable (a sketchpad full of drawings Thomas and Miranda both used, Meditarions – James had had to look away when Miranda put it in the bag although his eyes stinging meant he probably wouldn’t have seen it clearly anyway – a few other bits and pieces Miranda had been given by Thomas during their marriage).
“Take this,” she said softly, holding out a simple silver ring. Solid and cold to the touch and James knew just by looking at it that it wasn’t meant to be worn by either of the Hamiltons. It was too heavy and indelicate for them.
“He wanted you to have it,” Miranda whispered, her eyes shining with tears, “You’ll wear it won’t you?”
James had already slipped it on his ring finger.
“Anything else we need to take?” he asked, quietly, keeping his voice level even as his eyes kept drifting to the ring and he felt as though he could barely breathe and he just wanted to scream and cry and storm to Thomas’s aid.
“Yes this,” Miranda held out a brown coat, “You’ll need something to keep you warm.”
James slipped it on without comment and then they left the house. It was only after they’d boarded the ship to take them far away from London and were safely hidden behind the door of their cabin that he felt the piece of paper in one of the pockets.
He took it out and unfolded it.
“This is to keep you warm even when I can’t. I will see you both again – TH.”
Miranda read the note over his shoulder then silently slid her arms around him and he finally sobbed into her shoulder.
