I’ve been considering Killjoys as the next thing to watch, but I don’t know if it’s my thing. Please pitch it to me?

Happily!

Do you like world-building? Do you like matriarchal societies with politics that are as vicious and as intricate in their rules as anything men have ever come up with? Do you like female villains AND female protagonists that kick ass? Do you like those same female protagonists to have weaknesses and never, ever be shamed for them by their male side-kicks? Do you like snappy dialogue and feeling sympathy for virtually everyone, yes, even most of the villains eventually? Do you like having it acknowledged that a shitty backstory does not mean someone didn’t do awful things that people have a right to hate them for?

If you answered yes to the above questions, then this show is for you. It’s got everything, including openly gay and bi characters who are NOT villains and are in fact delightful (including, again, THE MAIN CHARACTER). It’s got religious systems that actually make sense given the history of the world they’ve built, it’s got male characters I’ve never once wanted to dropkick and male characters that I have – basically, I love this show and everyone should go watch it now.

Warning – it can get really freaky from time to time and there’s some definite body horror/truly nasty methods of execution but if you got through the keelhauling in Sails, you can get through this. Abuse is definitely present and handled in a sensitive manner but still, if this is a trigger for you, please be careful.

@flintsredhair :  James rescues Charles in s3 and Feels ensue. Also if they could somehow save Thomas that would be great.

HERE YOU GO. Not the most exciting piece but there is *tension* in there.

Freeing Charles was simpler in the end than he had expected. The guards were tired; overworked, with little to no sleep and rations that were starting to spoil. He took some of the stronger and more dependable men from his crew in the dead of night and stole Charles away right under the “governor’s” nose.

Charles spat on the floor where he had been chained before taking a sword, buckling it to his belt, and a pistol in hand. The dirt smeared on his cheeks and brow made him seem more animal than man – his hair was dirty and tangled where it hung over his shoulders, adding to the image.

“Seems our roles have reversed,” Charles grunted. There was appreciation in his voice, a dulled edge to his gaze as he stood before Flint.

“I’ve suffered the deaths of too many who mean something to me; I’ll suffer no more.”

The words were sincere. He thought at first that they would make him seem weak, but Charles lowered his eyes and shifted ever so slightly closer, held his hand out. His palm was hot, clammy with sweat, but solid and alive in Flint’s own hand. They held on a moment too long. It was only a moment, barely more than a breath, but James felt a sting in his heart as the feeling of calloused skin under his fingers took him back to Thomas’ bed.

As they left the streets, boarded the Walrus and headed out to open water, Flint let his breath come easier. The weight in his chest and shoulders lifted, his whole being finding a calmness in the moments after. They would stay out of sight for a few days, retreat away from Nassau to prevent fighting before returning to take the island back from the so-called “civilised hands” of the British Empire.

Or that was the plan.

Charles told him of news he had heard, a secret that hadn’t yet reached the ears of the governor, and James’ whole world crumbled and reassembled in moments.

“There’s a place,” Charles had said, “in Spanish Florida. Rich men’s shames are sent there to be hidden away; love children, slaves with too much in their heads, unwanted relatives… Kept out of the way in exchange for money and secrecy. Word is there’s a man there who you might have known, once.”

To say he kept his composure is a lie. James felt the sob in his throat only as it clawed its way out. Charles let him weep, only reached out to touch when the breath didn’t enter his lungs and his vision blurred and faded.

Charles asked quietly, a hand on the back of James’ neck like an anchor to keep him from drifting back into that black abyss of guilt and grief, “who is he?”

James shared his story then. Every moment of happiness, the sharp sting of loss, the blast of betrayal that finalised his form as a monster in the eyes of men. Charles listened, his expression sombre and troubled at the tale as each turn was revealed.

“You love him,” was the only thing Charles said.

“More than I can say. For ten years I’ve grieved, ten fucking years-”

A hand rested on his knee. The warmth made his chest flutter, his lips purse. Charles just touched him though; it was an act of comfort, of understanding, one that James felt linger for hours after.

They set sail for Florida as soon as the wind picks up. Charles stood by his side on the quarterdeck as the sailed towards the sun.

@flintsredhair OK. I’ll consider it, but I have TWELVE wips at the moment (though I could possibly work this in with my other pirate miranda idea, at least part of that series)

Meanwhile, I can give you all the headcanons:

  • This is like, maybe several years before S1
  • James taught Miranda to fight right when they got there, she tried staying in the house but she wasn’t about that life.
  • After Thomas “died” she wasn’t about to sit still and James be the only angry one. She cut her hair and decided to join the crew, and there was no stopping her.
  • She got along really well with Gates, and they tried to keep James in check for a while
  • She was the one to head the hunt for the Maria Aleyne
  • She got on a lot better with people than James, but everyone was rather terrified of her, there’s a whole bunch of rumours about how she’s actually a witch and all that (there’s another about how she was once a lady back in London, but then sold her soul, killed her husband and family and ran off with a pirate – she hates that one so much)
  • After several years she had quite a few people quite loyal to her, including like, every female pirate on the island (I think there was a one sentence mention to a female captain in the show somewhere)
  • Eventually she decides that wants to start her own crew, when James captures a particularly nice ship. James isn’t a particular fan of the idea but she’s gotten damn good at this he’s learned long ago that there’s no stopping her. They still have quite a few disagreements about methods and what not. (In fact some are quite legendary, people who don’t know their whole story thinking OH SHIT FLINT AND BARLOW SHOWDOWN, when they probably argued about it some more, but ultimately came to an understanding).
  • Miranda, James and Eleanor are the unstoppable trio that rule Nassau more or less. They’re all trying to work to build the place. Also Eleanor kinda knows most of their story here.
  • Miranda and Eleanor are bffs. Also I ship it, so that might be a thing.
  • Vane had a run in with Miranda once (maybe re Eleanor) and it did not go so well for him, he decided not to mess with her ever again. (Also Flint probably tried to go after him for that)
  • They might not always agree on things, but they’ve got each other’s backs, so come after one and the other will get you
  • They find Thomas and have a happy reunion with all three of them.

James/Thomas Appreciation Week | Day 06

Day Six: Favourite “Little Thing”

let’s start with the colour blue: i think most of their shared scenes, when they’re enjoying themselves, blue is a dominant colour. the way both fidget with their rings, is adorable! i understand it might be a way to be able to speak up and being anxious about it ;; thomas does it when he proposes pardoning the pirates, not sure if james will follow him ahh~

books, damn. these nerds are connected by literature and i can only see them having endless conversations after making out, about their books and discussing their perspectives about them *_____*

the way they make each other smile is—MY EVERYTHING. it’s so cheeky and they both knOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING TO EACH OTHER!!!!!!!! !!! ! KILL ME

Miranda gifted him with Milton on their fifth wedding anniversary with a wicked smile on her lips and mirth dancing in her eyes. His head in her lap as he read, her hair tickling his forehead when she leaned over to point at one line or another.

Sometime after he finished, Miranda said, “He reminded me of you.”

“Lucifer?”

“Don’t be dramatic, Thomas.”

(the one where Thomas Hamilton experiences the world through gratuitous literary references)

For the anon who said: “For the Black Sails art
asks how about Flint & Madi hanging out reading? Love your work.” Eeeeeh, anon, thank youuu. I love these two and I wish they could have had more screentime together just chilling and geeking out. I think perhaps I projected too much of myself on Madi here, not sure if she would actually snuggle… :’)

@caesarsbuddy, this one is up for colouring if you want 🙂
