I know I’m hardly one to talk here, but I was just thinking about how many writers, especially fanfic writers, have the same refrain of “I know how it begins, and I know how it ends, but I’m bogged down in the middle.”

My question to them would be: do you know those other scenes, or have you written them? Maybe it’s some leftover from our school system, but it’s amazing how many people have the lingering feeling they have to write their story scenes in the order they’d be read.

If you know how that epic end scene is going to go, write it now. If you know how the story starts, write that down. The worst that can happen is you’re left with a few unconnected scenes, but more likely what will happen is you’ll gain greater clarity on what is needed between them. The more scenes you have written in general, the easier it is to see the trajectory of how to connect them.

TL;DR: There are no writing police, no teacher is going to show up at your door because you had your dessert before your vegetables!
