candlewinds:

I know that it’s like Symbolism 101 but holy moly do I ever love the fact that the crew is becalmed until the second flint and silver come back from their lil boat trip having entered a new phase of their relationship. during the beginning of the episode (3×03) there is all this tension between the two of them and they’ve reached this horrible standstill where flint (who is struggling with unimaginable grief and the stress of being a captain of a starving and frightened crew) is desperately clinging to his control, isolating himself emotionally, refusing to accept help or guidance, and keeping silver out out outand silver is so tired of feeling useless and so tired of flint disregarding him, and just wants to be seen as something more in his eyes, someone who deserves to be let in, who deserves to be right there making the damn decisions with him, because he is not inferior and he will not be pushed aside any longer. they are both hyperaware of one another – silver’s “I’m clearheaded, billy. I see him” and flint’s “we’ll need to keep a close eye on him” – but flint is so far away and silver isn’t sure how to bridge the gap, has tried to bridge the gap and has failed because flint is having none of it, so they’re just stuck in this state, two planets circling around one another but never touching. they are trapped in the doldrums!!! THEIR RELATIONSHIP REQUIRES MOVEMENT. and what happens?!? they go out on that small boat, just the two of them away from the rest of the world, where finally they can meet in the middle and BOOM. silver makes his confession; flint soaks it all in and decides that yes, they are better off as partners than as rivals, and so he picks up his oars and they move forward, and they are able to work together to get the shark and bring back sustenance for their crew. billy asks what happened out there as if he can literally feel that things have shifted but doesn’t quite know how, and silver says, dreamily, “progress.” and tHEN RIGHT THEN, RIGHT FRICKIN’ THEN, THERE IS A GUST OF WIND. A GUST OF WIND AND THEY ARE ALL SAVED.
