rewatching s3 and honestly for almost the past year i have wondered about that dream flint has of miranda – where she’s in the green dress, and he tells her he’s ruined over her. at first i was confused about where that dream was set, but a rewatch told me that it was definitely the governor’s house, and so i spent ages being like ‘why the fuck does flint dream about miranda in the governor’s house??? but they would never have been there together??? why not thomas’ house in london or something???’

and then today, after a FUCKING YEAR, it finally hit me: lieutenant james mcgraw would have visited that house ten years ago, when nassau still had a governor. he would have stood in that house and dreamed of one day standing there with thomas and miranda. one day not far in the future, he would have thought, thomas’ plan for the pardons would come into effect, and they could move here and live freely and govern nassau together and do right by the place and by its people.

and then everything fell apart, obviously. but now, james is aware that there’s probably a new english governor stepping foot in nassau, taking up residence in that house. a governor who has adopted thomas’ plans from all those years ago – twisted them into something else, but fulfilled them all the same. and so james dreams of miranda and him standing in the governor’s house, as he dreamt once, ten years ago. their dream was so close to becoming reality. it has become another man’s reality, now, but it was once james’ dream, for him, for thomas, for miranda.

that’s why he dreams about miranda in the governor’s house.
