I want to talk about Thomas Hamilton for a few minutes, and I know full well that in this fandom you can’t say anything even remotely neutral about Thomas without being accused of “hate.” So I’m going to start off by saying: this is not a hateful post. I just want to share my thoughts on how his character was written on the show.
It’s not Thomas’ fault that he was, by design, mostly absent from the show’s narrative, while looming in the background in a very significant way. We were supposed to think he was dead for 2.5 seasons, after all. And as someone who has a personal history of knowing that your memory of dead loved one hardly ever resembles the truth, it is difficult for me to view Thomas’ character as anything other than an idealized version of himself as presented by James and Miranda. He is the flame that James carries in his heart, he’s a symbol of Flint’s struggle. He is, by design, not a very fleshed out human being. If you look at fandom, 90% of what I’ve read about Thomas has all been mostly conjecture and headcanons. If you ask five different BS fans to describe Thomas Hamilton, you are likely to get 5 totally different descriptions of Thomas Hamilton. I know that I personally have a preferred version of Thomas, which may very well not be your preferred version of Thomas. In a way, that makes him even more fun for me to write, but I get that’s not everyone’s cup of tea. AND THAT IS FINE. So what if someone’s interpretation of Thomas’ character is that he is “boring”? If that’s the worst that someone can say about your favorite character, they’re doing pretty fucking well for themselves. Worse things have been said about every single person on the show, including Flint and Miranda. It doesn’t make your own interpretation of him any less true and it certainly doesn’t make it hate. It simply means they prefer to put their eggs in a different basket. I guess what I’m trying to say is, expressing a different opinion isn’t always a hostile act, so long as it’s respectful and doesn’t descend to personal insults. I think, the Thomas I headcanon would probably agree with me.
Well said El. People seem to forget that different opinions are actually something that is allowed to exist and valid and no,you don’t have to agree but you gotta understand that critisizing a character and expressing your different opinion does not equal hate. Everything we know about Thomas Hamilton comes from a handful of scenes in S2 and mentions here and there. From this alone we were able to fill in the gaps left by canon and create our own versions of a man and I say we did good! My own headcanons are pretty explicit, but well my version of Thomas is snarky and fabulously filthy. He’ve done stuff you people cannot even imagine lol. And that is just him in London. I don’t know who he is now after 10 years of Bethlem and work camp/prison.10 years change people, even if they did go through anything awful. Trying to figure him out now is actually pretty interesting, but ALL of it is now headcanons. Because we don’t know him. But that gives us a chance to explore the character, right?!
To some Thomas is everything, some dislike him, some don’t get him, some don’t care he exists and some want to ship him with a character other than Flint….it’s all ok.If someone doesn’t find him interesting doesn’t mean that they declared war on people who love him and must be labeled as the WORST EVER.Tbh this is so ridiculous I can’t even…I mean there is an entire part of fandom who actually hates Flint, did you know that?! I love him with all my heart and soul and I don’t get it and they are clearly wrong, but everyone has a right to like and dislike characters and not getting harassed about it or worse-bullying. And I mean this about all and any characters-be it Thomas,Silver,Flint or any others.
but you gotta understand that critisizing a character and expressing your different opinion does not equal hate.
