Thank you! They really do deserve the world and I keep trying to give it to them since canon wouldn’t.

I don’t know if it was you who suggested this idea, but I very much want a fic where Silver doesn’t betray everyone, Flint hears about Thomas, but in the end he and Madi still go through with the war and burn shit (with flint at first of course, being the strategist he is), but after that when there’s only the occasional ship to fight off, and nassau is getting itself together, he retires and goes to live in a small house with Thomas. No one bothers them because they’re terrified of Flint after.
I wasn’t the one to suggest it, but gods just imagine a world where Silver didn’t fuck up. Imagine him doing the right, decent thing and telling Flint about Thomas and then agreeing to go North with him and hit that plantation fast and hard in a drive to recruit some of the men that work there (since I can’t imagine they’re too enthralled with the civilization that stuck them there). Imagine it. Imagine James Flint McGraw growing his hair back out and standing, a small grin on his face, as Britain gives into his demands and at the very least outlaws slavery in the New World, with Thomas at his side, and Silver on the other side with Madi, both of them ready to walk away and start a new life.

I like Silver, but also fuck him. Even if they would’ve died, they would’ve died fighting for what they believed in. It didn’t scare them, they were willing to die for it, they thought it was worth dying for. And maybe they would’ve lost, but maybe they would’ve inspired a further uprising. If you didn’t believe in it, you should’ve walked away, you shouldn’t have made them think that you shared their conviction and then stab them in the back. Their life, their choice, but you took it away.
THANK YOU THIS A THOUSAND TIMES THIS! This is exactly what I’m saying in regards to Silver and his version of love that… emphatically is not love. Love does not try to control, it does not say to someone, “your life is more important than your spirit.” Silver has never had convictions or he would know that, and if he loved either of them he would not have done so many of the things he did. I mean – what kind of amoral fuck finds out that the love of his friend’s life is alive, knowing that that friend has been in agony for ten years, and then not only doesn’t free their friend’s lover or tell the friend they’re alive but marks down the prison they’re being kept in as a place to maybe send their friend as well? What kind of twisted asshole then tries to tell the BLACK WOMAN DESCENDED FROM SLAVES he hopes to marry that he’s sent that friend – a friend of hers as well – North in chains to stay at that prison as if it’s not engaging in a form of slavery and tries to pretend it’s ok because it was for their own good? That is not love – that is control, and it is toxic and gross and so, so not what either Madi or Flint deserved. I think I’ve made it pretty clear that I am absolutely not a fan of Silver’s at this point precisely because of this and I honestly don’t know how Madi is meant to forgive him for any of this. I find myself wishing that she and Vane had gotten together instead and that he had lived – he never would have done this to her.
um. i love thomas hamilton. Love him. I LOve him. i
You and me both, Nonny! There’s a reason that I spend a not-inconsiderable amount of time writing from his perspective.
(If Silver wanted to know what love was, he should have asked Flint more about his relationship with Thomas)
Yes, he absolutely should have, because there is a relationship done right. James might not have agreed with Thomas completely, but he backed him up when it counted because his ideals were important to him as a person. And Thomas, bless him, tried to keep James from being in the line of fire because he knew how much his career meant to him.
Also, how the fuck Flint’s afterlife plantation looks exactly like real life plantation?! He never saw that fucking place in his life and here he’s dead and it looks exactly like the real one? It’s ridiculous!
There’s that too, yeah. Guy that shows him through the door to the field looks exactly like the actual guy who runs the place as shown in the beginning scene which is not part of this maybe he is maybe he isn’t nonsense. Tom Morgan is standing in the background, and I don’t think Flint probably remembered all of Silver’s random henchmen. Point is – there’s too much that’s out of place for Flint to know for me to buy the symbolism as anything but him going from the dark returning to the light that is his previous self and Thomas. Yes, there’s symbolism going on, but I’m not taking the Greek tragedy meaning out of it. James Flint McGraw is alive, that’s my bottom line.
Edit: Also, why in the hell would James be imagining Thomas with a beard? I know it’s a small point, but Thomas was always clean-shaven when he knew him.
The way I’m seeing this is basically death of the author. The text is open enough for us to interpret that both james and thomas left that plantation in the next 15min, and that’s how I chose to see it. If that’s not how steinberg intended it then tough luck to him, because it’s not what his text necessarily says. It sucks that it’s what he’s saying in interviews and that it’s what he thought was something silver would do, and that he thought it would be a satisfying ending
yeah – I can’t believe that they somehow thought that having James and Thomas both imprisoned for the rest of their days is in any way satisfying considering what James has done in the name of freedom and the fact that Thomas has never in his whole life done anything to warrant being treated like that. I’m glad they’re both alive but I could have done without the ambiguous nature of that scene, tbh.
at what point do u think thomas realized that was James standing in front of him ???? flint saw thomas from behind and He Knew. But thomas looks at him a good while before he breaks out in that beautiful little laugh but wwas That when he Recognized him or ????? ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
I think it took a moment to decide if it was really James or someone who just looked a lot like him and then he got closer and Thomas couldn’t believe his eyes until he’d stared at him for a minute and he didn’t turn into some kind of heat mirage. After all, James has changed a lot over the years and Thomas hasn’t had a portrait to stare at, even a bad one.
it didn’t come off to me like flint was being locked up there too? it was more they went there and paid the head dude off to let thomas go.
I’m going to headcanon that’s what’s going on bc the alternative is just too awful to even contemplate and makes me want Silver’s head on a platter with an apple in his mouth and his balls on a tiny plate beside it. Just – the guy in charge had the key to James’ shackles and that does not bode well at all. Just no, no, no, no, and fuck Silver extra hard with something very hot if that’s what I’m meant to take out of this. I’m going to go with the shackles are there for everyone’s protection until he sees Thomas and then it’s safe to let them both go. Right? Right.
What does it……. ehat does it mean what does it MEAN ….. is thomas alive……. isn’t he……
I wish I knew, Nonny! I want him to be alive. I want him to be alive and James to get him back so bad, though. Can you imagine them getting us to the point where we don’t think it can be any more than James does and then suddenly boom there he is?
