I couldn’t agree more. If there’s anything history has shown us, it’s that that fight was not, in fact, unwinnable. I get why certain characters believed it was. I get that they had valid reasons for thinking that, but I disagree with them pretty firmly, not to mention that even if the fight couldn’t be won, it still needed to be fought. There are things worth dying for.

What do you think about this? J Steinberg: I think there was an awareness that when watched in a certain way there was so much tragedy already in the ending. Of all the people who were lost and weren’t there anymore, and how close they were to something historically meaningfully that got bargained away, that to then pile that on with even more misery just felt unpleasant
I think it sounds like an acknowledgment that in fact, if looked at from literally any other perspective than “no more people died in the last episode, wheee!” the end of the show is a tragedy. Flint and Madi were betrayed by the one closest to them, and all their work was essentially thrown out the window as if it meant nothing when in fact it could have meant everything to generations of people. Flint is enslaved, Madi’s left with her authority undermined among her own people, her lover become foreign to her, standing there telling her that he’s sold her friend.
When you get right down to it, the list just goes on and on. The Walrus crew is dead, the ship itself is blown up, Silver throws away an entire life he could have lived with people who would have cared about him, loved him even, and all for a scant few years of peace in that area before the British Empire decided it wanted its islands back. All of that – for what? When they could have had so, so much more. Yes, Flint is alive. He’s also being locked away from the world, condemned to be nothing more than a monster in a children’s story, exactly the way he feared, what he stood for forgotten, his reasons disregarded, no progress made, all those people he lost dead for nothing. Vane is dead, and nothing came of his death, not the revolution he wanted to spark, not the abolition of slavery, not even safety for Eleanor if he still wanted that. Eleanor died, and Nassau burned again, and the slaves on those plantations suffered horribly, and for fucking what? For one man to say, this fight isn’t worth fighting, it doesn’t matter to me, I’m ending it. For he and Max and Madame Guthrie to decide to strangle the cat rather than dealing with the root cause of the problem to begin with, as if there were only one solution to the riddle?
Name three characters you think of when you think of me: Flint, either Thomas or Miranda (it depends), Silver (bc I support your views on the finale).
Thanks, Nonnie! I’ll take being associated with Flint, Thomas, and/or Miranda any time, although if I had to pick which one I’m like I’d say probably Miranda. Thanks for the support!
The more I think on the finale and the more meta I read, the more I believe Madi would tell Silver she’s going to Savannah to get Flint and Hamilton and that he’d better be gone by the time they come back or else. I just can’t believe she wouldn’t do everything in her power to free Flint (he and Thomas come as a package deal now, so) or that she could look at Silver again without feeling disgust, betrayal, and rage.
I have to agree, Anon. Whatever Silver’s reasons for doing what he did, I cannot imagine Madi forgiving what he’s done or leaving Flint to the fate that Silver designed for him. For there to be forgiveness, the perpetrator must first be sorry and unless and until Silver recognizes what he did and why it was wrong, I can’t see Madi or especially Thomas feeling anything but anger and disgust toward him.
When is the next update for The Cup Of Their Deserving? I’ve really enjoyed that fic and can’t wait for more!
Sooooooon! I’m almost done with chapter 9, I promise! Work has been crazy and sapping all of my creative energy lately but things should get better after today. I have all next week off to get some writing done and actually get enough sleep for once! *dances*
What are your 3 favorite things regarding Flint in season 4? For me it’s: 1) Reunion, 2) Flint/Madi, 3) “Freedom in the dark”.
Hmmm – that’s a tough one! I think my favorite things about him in season 4 are of course the reunion, his friendship with and respect for Madi, and the sheer amount of progress he’s made since season 3. There are so many moments when you think back to season 3 and realize that if season 3 Flint were standing there, things would go so differently, whereas season 4 Flint is so much more McGraw – and I do say McGraw, not Flint, because McGraw would order survivors carried to the ship and try to help his shipmates when they’re getting shot at and refuse to kill civilians, not Flint.
I love your Black Sails fics and I’ve read all of them! I was wondering if you could do some Black Sails fic recs of your favorites to read?
ooh, happily! These are some of my favorites:
Courtesy of Thomas Hamilton by Char7 – this one was done for me on a prompt and I still love it to little bitty pieces. It’s a take on “what if James had been sent to Bedlam instead of Thomas”
Wars Without Weapons by Shirogiku – In which Thomas saves himself from Bedlam
Never a Smooth Sailing by Shirogiku – In which James falls off the Walrus instead of Billy during Season 1 and reunions ensue
The Wind in His Sails by linndechir – this is a post-canon fic that I loved because it handles Thomas’ lingering issues from being imprisoned for ten years realistically and has him work through them a bit or start to and it’s fluffy and sweet at the same time
Revenant by Beth Winter – I LOVED EVERY WORD OF THIS FIC it is so perfect given that it’s got badass angry Thomas taking Abigail in as his ward and the two of them with James ready to burn England to cinders. I’m hoping the author does the sequel they were tossing around doing pre-finale.
a sweet light in the dark by Gedsparrowhawk – This one made me cry but it’s so, so good, and Bri, don’t think I’ve forgotten that you mentioned a sequel that would destroy me!
The New World by ESebastian – I fucking love this thing more than I have ever loved any fic that has James Flint paired with anyone other than Thomas and Miranda. It’s amazing, I adore the OCs, all of them, but especially Ezra Wake.
That should get you started, Nonny! I’m sure I can rec others, but these are all on my favorites list.
I’ve been reading your flinthamilton fics on AO3 for a while now and they’re some of my favourites and I loved your blog but I never knew both belonged to the same wonderful person! Thank you for bringing so much joy :)
Awww, Nonny, thank you! This really made my day so I thank you right back for being so awesome!
You headcanons: You’re a cat person. You like doing outdoor things. You read a lot, and you’re basically Flint, with your words and literature references. Except, instead to killing us with your tactical skills, you kill us with your carefully thought out plots and masterfully written fics.
Aww, thank you! Anon, whoever you are, you know me scarily well! Although up until recently I’d always classed myself as more of a Thomas than a Flint, but then again I do in fact adore the Odyssey and have probably way too many freckles and zero patience for bullshit so…. hmm. that would seem to contradict my theory and give weight to yours. Um… guilty as charged?
Have you listened the Luke Arnold’s FD interview? i d like to know what you thing about it.
I have not – I’ve never been a Fathoms Deep listener, tbh. I’ve seen a couple of quotes from it and I enjoy his headcanon about the parrot. I’m open to being filled in, though!
