WH official: We’ll say ‘fake news’ until media realizes attitude of attacking the President is wrong

Sebastian
Gorka, deputy assistant to President Donald Trump, said Monday that the
administration will continue using the term “fake news” until the media
understands that their “monumental desire” to attack the President is
wrong.

“There is a monumental
desire on behalf of the majority of the media, not just the pollsters,
the majority of the media to attack a duly elected President in the
second week of his term,” Gorka, a former Breitbart editor who also
holds a PhD in political science, told syndicated conservative radio
host Michael Medved.  “That’s how
unhealthy the situation is and until the media understands how wrong
that attitude is, and how it hurts their credibility, we are going to
continue to say, ‘fake news.‘  I’m sorry, Michael.  That’s the reality,”
he added.

Trump and his staff have repeatedly used
the term “fake news” to discredit reporting on the presidential
administration from mainstream outlets such as CNN and The New York
Times
, often offering no evidence to back up their disputes with those
outlets’ stories.

Earlier in the
interview, Gorka was asked by Medved whether he would acknowledge that
the administration’s controversial statement on Holocaust Remembrance
Day was “at least questionable in being the first such statement in many
years that didn’t recognize that Jewish extermination was the chief
goal of the Holocaust.”

Gorka
replied by calling criticism of the statement “asinine,” arguing that
it was motivated by the media’s desire to attack Trump.

“It’s
a Holocaust remembrance statement,” Gorka said.  “No, I’m not going to
admit it.  Because it’s asinine.  It’s absurd.  You’re making a statement
about the Holocaust.  Of course it’s about the Holocaust because that’s
what the statement’s about.  It’s only reasonable to twist it if your
objective is to attack the President.”

Gorka
also sparred with a caller who contended that “every time you call
everything fake news, it just turns everyone except your hardcore fans
off.”

“Not everything’s fake news,” the caller added.

“You
know, I would beg to differ,” Gorka shot back.  “Every single organ that
generates these kinds of stories comes from the same clique of media
organs that predicted that Hillary (Clinton) would win and that Brexit
wouldn’t occur.  I know what fake news is.  And it’s coming from those
organizations. It’s time that you yourself understood that as well.“

So the Trump Administration outright says they’ll continue to de-legitimize the
media until they toe the line and stop “attacking” (i.e. disagreeing
with, or presenting facts that disagree with) the President and his
agenda.

THIS IS NOT NORMAL!

“Comrade Gorka” here is deeply upset about the way the media insists on reporting the TRUTH instead of only saying the things that won’t hurt the precious feelings of the Adulterer in Chief Donald Trump…

Who is apparently a special little snowflake who just can’t handle it when people say MEAN THINGS about him…let me go get the wolds tiniest fucking violin to play the worlds saddest song…in fact the violin will be so tiny it will perfectly fit in those troll doll hands that Trump has

This delusional fuckwit piece of garbage (Who looks like he shouldn’t be allowed to live within five hundred yards of a school) is exactly the kind of filthy sub-human TRASH I’d expect to see supporting VERMIN like Donald Trump and I hope that the media ignores his PATHETIC bitching and whining about how MEAN it is of them to be so HARSH on poor little Special Snowflake Donald Trump

Reminder that criticizing the President (or the government as a whole) is permitted under the 1st Amendment, something our Founding Fathers were persecuted for doing before the Revolution and what they intentionally wanted to avoid happening again in making the Constitution.

Also, fucking Republicans did it for 8 fucking years and now they’re being hypocritical fucks about respecting a disgraceful character like Donny McFuckface.

“To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.” – Theodore Roosevelt

Trump Is Declaring War on Our Federal Courts, and We Must Pay Attention – Rewire

justinspoliticalcorner:

Jessica Mason Pieklo at Rewire:

Over the weekend, President Donald Trump launched into another Twitter rant, this time attacking the legitimacy of a “so-called” federal court judge who on Friday issued a nationwide injunction blocking the Refugee and Visa Order cooked up by Trump and his wingman Steve Bannon.

Federal District Court Judge James Robart is a 2003 George W. Bush appointee. Like Sally Yates—the former acting attorney general who also disagreed with the constitutionality of the order, known as the Muslim ban, and who was then promptly fired by Trump—Robart is a civil servant widely respected by Republicans and Democrats alike. In fact, the likely future Attorney General Sen. Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III (R-AL) voted for his confirmation.

And while it would be easy to write off Trump’s latest Twitter tirade as just that—Trump’s latest Twitter tirade—it would be exceedingly foolish to do so. After all, each one aims to stifle opposition and dissent. So when those temper tantrums are directed at the federal courts, and specifically federal judges who issue orders in opposition to Trump’s policies, we must pay attention to them.

Trump’s latest outburst matters for several reasons. First, it is part of an ongoing effort by the administration to de-legitimize the institution of the federal courts. This is important, because we’ll likely see a lot of Trump’s agenda end up in federal litigation.

Look at the challenges to the Muslim ban alone. In addition to the numerous other petitions filed on behalf of individuals immediately affected by the ban, Trump’s executive order is already in front of a federal appeals court. Almost immediately after Robart issued the injunction, the Trump Department of Justice asked for a stay of that order from the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, the federal appellate court that hears cases from, among others, Robart’s district. The Ninth Circuit refused that request immediately and entirely. It follows, then, that while we are many steps from getting there, Trump’s Muslim ban is likely to end up before the U.S. Supreme Court at some point. Given the fact we’re not even a full month into Trump’s presidency, and the additional campaign promises he clearly intends to keep—like signing unconstitutional abortion bans—there will almost certainly be more of Trump’s policies before the Court too.

This is important because President Trump has sent a very clear message to federal judges: Try and block my policies and find yourself on the receiving end of executive-branch wrath. Trump didn’t send one stray tweet, after all: He launched into a series of tweets suggesting that should another foreign terrorist attack happen on U.S. soil, it would be the fault of the courts for disobeying Trump and blocking the executive action. This is unchartered waters for our democracy; it has the potential to undermine the necessary check the federal courts serve on the executive branch. Quite simply, Trump is trying to bully federal judges out of ruling against him and suggesting those who do are not “legitimate” members of the federal courts.

Second, Trump’s attacks on the federal courts matter because those attacks have the power to influence the culture and composition of the courts themselves. Last week, Trump nominated federal appeals court judge Neil Gorsuch to fill the seat left vacant by Antonin Scalia’s death. It’s not enough for Democratic members of the Senate Judiciary Committee to ask Gorsuch during his hearing if he disagrees with Trump’s comments; Senate Democrats need to ask him point-blank if he’s independent from the president, or if he was nominated because Trump and Bannon feel confident he will rule as they need him to.

And this approach needs to extend to all of Trump’s other court nominees. By suggesting that the federal courts are illegitimate because they disagree with his policy, Trump makes suspect every single one of his nominees moving forward. Why would Trump nominate a judge he thought for a second would not move his agenda along, Constitution be damned?

Then there is the possibility of impeachment. After all, every day Trump remains in office he’s violating the Constitution because he hasn’t fully divested of his private business dealings, including dealings in places specifically left off Trump’s Muslim ban.

So let’s say it happens. Let’s say somehow, Republicans in the House find some courage and actually do draft Articles of Impeachment. That impeachment trial will happen in the Senate, where Chief Justice John Roberts will preside over the proceedings.

And let’s say those proceedings end up with Trump impeached. Will Trump, Bannon, and his supporters accept that ruling and leave office? Or will this “so-called federal judge,” aka Roberts, be attacked, and the order removing Trump from office ignored?

Like Trump’s attacks on the media and the “fake news” narrative, the attacks on the federal courts are designed to both chill opposition to Trump’s policies and to call into question the institutions set up to check the power of the presidency. Trump can’t fire Judge Robart the way he did Sally Yates, so instead he’s attacking Robart’s legitimacy. We’ve seen this, too, with Trump’s approach to the New York Times, CNN, and any political reporting or polling that shows disagreement with his agenda.

That’s also why the press and the courts are more critical than ever. Because Trump can’t fire them, they are the two institutions which have the greatest ability to act as the firewall to Trump and Bannon completely laying waste to our democratic ideals.

Just like his war on the media that don’t 100% worship him, he’s leading a war on our court systems.

  • Spurred by Trump’s immigration crackdown, L.A. City Council moves to decriminalize street vending

Councilman Jose Huizar told reporters it was “a sign to this Trump administration that we will not abide by his fear, his vilification, his scapegoating of immigrants.” (Currently, street vending is a misdemeanor, and people have been asking for it to be decriminalized for ages. But in light of the high numbers of immigrants who work as street vendors and Trump’s attitude toward “any excuse to deport,” it finally lit a fire under their butts.) 1/31/17

  • Representative Jason Chaffetz has officially withdrawn HR 621, which would have sold federal lands to private buyers, directly as a response to public outcry, according to his official Instagram.

jasoninthehouse I am withdrawing HR 621. I’m a proud gun owner, hunter and love our public lands. The bill would have disposed of small parcels of lands Pres. Clinton identified as serving no public purpose but groups I support and care about fear it sends the wrong message. The bill was originally introduced several years ago. I look forward to working with you. I hear you and HR 621 dies tomorrow. #keepitpublic#tbt

Big money moves slow, but people are starting to pull their money away from Dakota Access Pipeline investors in a big way.

  • The Seattle City Council Finance Committee voted 8-0 on Wednesday to divest $3 billion in City of Seattle money out of Wells Fargo over the bank’s role as lender for the Dakota Access Pipeline.
  • ABN AMRO, the Dutch bank, today announced that it will end its financing for Energy Transfer Equity (ETE) if the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) will be constructed without the consent of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe, or if further violence will be used. The Dutch Fair Finance Guide, Greenpeace Netherlands and BankTrack welcome the decision of ABN AMRO, and call on other banks, including ING in the Netherlands, to follow this example and end all outstanding finance to the pipeline and the companies behind it if no agreement is reached with the Sioux Tribe about the pipeline.

Big-name American corporations are coming out against the Muslim ban, including Ford and Budweiser (in a way).

Erica Chenoweth at The Guardian has an article sharing useful resistance techniques from history, and an encouraging statistic:

And for your funnybone, here are some people giving ol’ Trumperdink the middle finger. (Which is also useful as a resistance tactic, as it turns out, seeing as #45 is a sensitive, spoiled child who can’t stand being made fun of or overshadowed.)

Terminated!

Trump

Ron Rosenbaum, world-class expert on the rise of Hitler, refused to write about Trump for months. Until now.

Cut
to the current election. We had heard allegations that Trump kept
Hitler’s speeches by his bedside, but somehow we normalized that. We
didn’t take him seriously because of all the outrageous, clownish acts
and gaffes we thought would cause him to drop out of the race. Except
these gaffes were designed to distract. This was his secret strategy,
the essence of his success — you can’t take a stand against Trump
because you don’t know where Trump is standing. You can’t find him
guilty of evil, you can’t find him at all.

President Trump is now speculating that the media is covering up terrorist attacks

Speaking
to the U.S. Central Command on Monday, President Trump went off his
prepared remarks to make a truly stunning claim: The media was
intentionally covering up reports of terrorist attacks.

“You’ve
seen what happened in Paris, and Nice. All over Europe, it’s happening,”
he said to the assembled military leaders. “It’s gotten to a point
where it’s not even being reported. And in many cases the very, very
dishonest press doesn’t want to report it. They have their reasons, and
you understand that.”

John Yoo op-ed: Executive Power Run Amok

As
an official in the Justice Department, I followed in Hamilton’s
footsteps, advising that President George W. Bush could take vigorous,
perhaps extreme, measures to protect the nation after the Sept. 11
attacks, including invading Afghanistan, opening the Guantánamo
detention center and conducting military trials and enhanced
interrogation of terrorist leaders. Likewise, I supported President
Barack Obama when he drew on this source of constitutional power for
drone attacks and foreign electronic surveillance.

But even I have grave concerns about Mr. Trump’s uses of presidential power.

Mike Huckabee to Fox Business: I don’t understand the role of the judiciary, and I’ll frame my ignorance in toxic masculinity!

I
think in the past we have had an executive branch that has emasculated
itself by surrendering constantly to the idea that once the court says
something, that’s it. It’s the law of the land, and when I hear that
phrase, it’s the law of the land cause the court said it, I think did
you guys pass ninth grade civics for gosh sake? The court can’t make
law. They cannot legislate.

Last week’s Yemen raid should warrant as much investigation as Benghazi did

But
by Republican standards, this should be a major, impeachment-worthy
scandal. Unless there’s some arbitrary minimum number of U.S. casualties
(greater than one but less than four) above which administrative heads
should roll, there’s no standard by which Benghazi should have become
the subject of a vast, conspiratorial inquest, but the botched raid in
Yemen should not.

The Ethics Case Against Betsy DeVos

As
former ethics counsels to Presidents Obama and George W. Bush, we’ve
reviewed more than our share of ethics filings for cabinet nominees.
Seldom have we seen a worse cabinet-level ethics mess than that
presented by Betsy DeVos, President Trump’s choice for education
secretary.

Her extensive financial holdings present
significant—and unresolved—conflict of interest issues. She also failed
to provide the Senate with accurate information about her involvement
with outside organizations. We have regretfully come to the conclusion
that these concerns disqualify DeVos for that cabinet position.

Nearly 250 education and civil rights groups say they oppose Betsy DeVos. Kellyanne Conway says the opposition to DeVos isn’t from “real people.

Democrats are holding the Senate floor all night to rally opposition to DeVos.

figsandnewtons:

The number of notes on that post advocating to not pursue an impeachment of Trump due to Pence is actually horrifying.

1. Pence is running things anyway. Showing the public the man behind the curtain is quite crucial. Remember, when Trump offered vp to Kasich, he told him he’d be in charge of both domestic and foreign affairs.

2. Trump’s temperament is likely to have extremely negative geopolitical consequences in a way that Pence’s wouldn’t. Who do you see as more likely to engage in a ground war along with Russia? Trump already talked about invading Iraq again. And this isn’t touching the nuclear arsenal thing.

3. Pence is not popular in Congress at all. A republican who is hugely hated in Indiana does not really have a ton of political capital, especially since he tanked their economy. A lot of the reason GOP swung to Trump late is because *he* was the charismatic face that was creating this supposed populist “movement” (the marches sort of knocked the wind out of that a little). It’s Trump that is being held up, and it’s Trump specifically the neonazis are looking towards (Bannon wrote his fucking inaugural address). We need Trump, the man, to go ASAP for that reason.

Pence will be our worst president, but he’ll be survivable, he’ll have no chance at reelection, and seeing as he’s already most definitely the one driving policy (Dep of Ed pick was his, almost without question, for instance), we at least need to have that recognized so he can be held accountable.

Pence is not the “real Hitler.” Authoritarian movements prop up one person. In this case it was Trump. The MAGA hats have jack-all to do with Pence, and exceedingly little to do with policy. Which is why Trump, specifically, is the threat to our democracy.

so this is literally part of what’s happening in the US right now

If you are originally from one of the countries in Trump’s ban and moved to the US, got greencards, and decided to go on a vacation recently, you won’t be allowed back in the US. Permanent residents are being effectively kicked out.

Lemme just say that again. You could have lived in the US for years, possibly moved here as a child and grown up here, and been vacationing in fucking Canada, and you won’t be allowed back. All because you were born in a country trump deemed dangerous.

You guys. If you came to the US from one of the listed countries as an INFANT, grew up here, and decided to study abroad this semester in another country, YOU CURRENTLY CANT COME BACK HOME.

If you are MARRIED to a US citizen and only have a green card and haven’t gotten citizenship yet, you can’t come back if you’re outside the US. You could have kids waiting for you, but you can’t come back.

People who served our country for over a decade, people whose lives are at risk if they head back to the middle east, people fleeing violence and death, a mother coming back to her family from a business trip, and some kid coming back from visiting their grandparents could all be currently sitting in detaining rooms in US airports because our xenophobic piece of shit president is scared of Muslims.
