Jeff Bezos is sitting on $97 billion because of stuff like this
Amazon made $47B in gross profits in 2016. They have 540,000 employees.
If they gave every employee a $5/hr wage increase and increased their workforce by 10% to reduce time pressures on individual workers, it would cost them between $6B and $9B per year (assuming 40 to 60 hr average work week), still leaving about $40B in gross profits. That’s still a ridiculously huge amount of money being made.
But capitalists always want to squeeze out ever more profits and this is always done by exploiting workers.
THIS is why they strike, and THIS is why we support them. DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM AMAZON FOR THE DURATION OF THE STRIKE. BUY ELSEWHERE, and MAKE IT CLEAR that you’re supporting the striking workers.
Support workers starting a strike in the 2nd week of July by boycotting Amazon beginning July 8, 2018 until they give in to striker’s demands.
This strike is purposely timed to disrupt Amazon’s Prime Deals event on July 16th, so you can show solidarity by not buying from Amazon during this time.
Also, please don’t think you’re helping the workers by buying more stuff during this time to increase workload–you’re only giving Bezos more cash if you buy off Amazon, and it’s not like HE has to personally process your packages for you.
It sends an even bigger message if you can cancel your Amazon Prime as well.
This is a European strike, so you can help even more if you live in Europe, but it will send a powerful message if people in other countries also boycott Amazon during this time, to say that you will not ignore the mistreatment of workers outside your country.
Today is the joint anniversary of the Glorious First of June and the Shannon-Chesapeake duel some 19 years later, off the Massachusetts coast. The former was the opening naval action in the 20 years war with Revolutionary/Napoleonic France, and the latter proved to be one of the most important single ship actions of the War of 1812.
Both actions added to the laurels of the respective commanders. Admiral Howe closed his career on a high; having served with distinction in the Seven Years war at Quiberon Bay, conducting the descent upon New York in the early years of the American War, and lifting the Siege of Gibraltar in 1782. He is one of the earlier heroes of the Age of Nelson.
Captain Philip Broke’s swift and crushing victory over the USS Chesapeake put an end to a string of victories by US frigates over British opponents which punctuated the early part of the War of 1812. The Shannon-Chesapeake duel was the only duel of the war in which neither combatant had a clear advantage in force. His subsequent victory therefore caused a sensation in both Britain and the United States.
Finished that watercolor commission of the Lady Washington, the first ship I ever crewed aboard and still queen of my heart. Some of you may have heard about the UK Cat Killer, some sick fuck who has killed and mutilated over 300 cats and other animals such as pet rabbits and wild foxes over the past 3-4 years.
Recently there have been an influx of more killings especially around the South Eastern area, including Surrey, Hampshire, Sussex, Berkshire, etc, where the animals have been mutilated and either returned to their owner or left on footpaths and sidewalks where kids regularly walk to school. School children have been finding theses horribly mutilated animals. Most recently, however, on Monday a lady’s cat was found beheaded and splayed out in a star shape beneath her bedroom window in the morning about 2 minutes away from where I live, my mum works at a vets and was visited by Scotland yard police who advised everyone who lives in the area to keep their pets in at all times if possible. Especially at night.
So, since Tumblr is so American-centric, I thought I’d write a little PSA telling people who live in the UK to please keep your pets in at night, and if possible, during the day.
Sources of information for those who want to read more about this arsehole:
but like who started the idea that fanfiction writers are somehow bothered by enthusiasm for their work???? cause i see posts all the time like “do writers really want to talk with us about their fics? Do writers really want long comments? I dont want to bother them” and i just think its absolutely ridiculous????
ofc i want to talk to you about it, and would love to hear you go on about it. i took time out of my real life to write this stuff down so we could all share these characters!!! the idea that you’re bothering a fanfiction writer, a fellow nerd, is absolutely crazy
Personally I attribute at least part of this to the shift of fandom onto Tumblr platform. Because of the way Tumblr works, multiple replies and reactions can get cluttered and overwhelming really fast, so leaving replies and feedback can be awkward. I have actually seen ‘tumblr etiquette’ posts going around scolding people for adding commentary onto posts when they reblog it! Actually discouraging people from reacting and adding their own words! If any of this attitude spills over onto fanfic posts and reblogs, no wonder readers are shy about adding their own words to an author’s posts.
Dear fans on tumblr:
WE, THE AUTHORS, REALLY WANT TO HEAR YOUR COMMENTS.
