The USS Savannah and Macedonian were old warships used as training vessels for the cadets at Annapolis at the time. Perhaps the USS Dale was also a training ship. Not sure why the cadets at Annapolis were visiting the Army cadets at West Point.
Oh! I actually know the answer to this one! American newspaper ads charged by the letter, so a lot of people would eliminate unnecessary letters like the second L in “cancelled” or the U in “colour”. Some of these spelling changes were used so often that they stuck, and now Americans just spell some words differently.
In summary: Americans spell things weird because capitalism
I had intended to do something else entirely last night… but, I had a lot of emotions. And so this happened. 3 and half hours with a biro. Miranda’s not quite there… but correcting biro can be a bit hit and miss.
