fanartists getting paid to make fanart while fanfic writers are terrified to get paid to make fic for fear of disproportional legal smackdown? the shittiest double standard

the normalization of people taking commissions for fanart is good of course! it’s wonderful! but when fanfic authors are left in the mud, tread on by the same people praising fanartists for doing commissions, and then made to be terrified of making money for their hard work when they put just as much care and effort into their work as fanartists? uhhh, nope. that’s complete shit.

(don’t @ me about the history of how this happened because trust me, i’m a fanfic author with a lot of friends who have been writing fic well into the early days of modern online fandom. i’m aware. that doesn’t make the double standard any better, believe it or not.)

exactly. if fic authors making a profit (almost always from one person, most likely being underpaid too because most people don’t want to pay what a fic would actually be worth) is the problem, then how come fanartists mass producing and selling fan pieces isn’t?

(again, not a knock at fanartists making money off their work, they deserve to be compensated, the double standard just deserves to be pointed out because it’s glaring)
