Had the realization that James McGraw is much more of a gentleman than any of the supposed “actual” gentlemen in the show: 

1. Didn’t betray his closest friend or lock up his son in an insane asylum. This is a pretty low bar, but it’s shocking how many people on this show fail to meet it. 

2. Respects the fuck out of women, no matter who they are. No matter their skin color or if they were former slaves. 

3. Defends women, both verbally and sword in hand, when necessary, and doesn’t thin any less of them for having to do so. 

4. Worries about their reputations and what people will say about a married woman being seen alone with him; gets hit on by a beautiful, intelligent aristocratic woman and takes her home instead out of respect for her reputation. 

5. Stands when a woman enters the room even after ten years as a pirate. 

6. Does business and makes deals with women without blinking in a world where women are supposed to smile, be quiet, and not wield power. 

7. Does not judge women for their sex lives

So, you know, if we’re talking ‘civilization’….
