It was a decision that should have been made among the Maroons, and while I can’t blame Madi for refusing the treaty under the circumstances it was offered, once it was in play again, it’s something she needed to consult with her people about. And yes – I’m not sure that things would have played out as she and Flint had intended, for precisely the reasons you mentioned, but again – Silver is not the one whose people had been enslaved, and he sure as hell did not have the right to take away their choice by removing Flint from play. That was not his decision even slightly. Madi and her people all had the right to make an informed decision based on what they had in front of them and all the resources at their command, not based on one man’s manipulative tactics fueled by his fear of losing one person. I’m not saying that this would have gone as planned, just that it was a possibility that could not be ignored and should not have been taken out of their hands by someone who had no stake in the larger cause and every privilege in the world as a white male.
