I still think James’s moment of pure bravery was when he took a deep breath and started walking towards Thomas.

Because like? I’d be nervous bumping into a friend I’ve not seen in a while just because well people change, y’know, what if we have nothing to say and just sit in awkward silence.

But this is someone James was deeply in love with a decade ago (and still is deeply in love with), someone who was looking at him but seemed quite tense and wary… and yet he still went “I’ve no idea what’s coming next but I’ve wanted to see him just once more everyday for ten years, I’ll be damned if I just go “Nope” and walk away from him.” 

And so he keeps walking even after uncertainty caused him to pause when he was almost in front of Thomas. Even when Thomas still looked confused and wary and suspicious.

James must have been going through a list of worst case scenarios of what could be said/done between them and how each one would destroy him that little bit more (especially all the worse case scenarios revolved around Thomas rejecting him and/or being killed in front of him) and instead all he got was Thomas making it obvious just how much he loves him.
