I felt guilty about all the angst so I wrote some happy flinthamilton head canons (@flintsredhair)

these are all beautifull!

as someone who can only tell stringed instruments from the ones with keys, I’m wondering: isn’t Miranda’s instrument a
harpsichord? at least that’s what I’ve been seeing floating around on gifsets and took as canon. is there a difference between
harpsichord

and clavichord? I know piano didn’t yet exist, but from there it’s total darkness. and what is tuning one of those -chords like? does she do it herself? does James try to help?

well, they are very similar instruments, but a clavichord is much smaller and quieter, and was historically used as a practice instrument as it wasn’t loud enough for live performances. This is a clavichord:

and this is a harpsichord:

we see a harpsichord in the flashbacks here – see how big it is?

the instrument she plays in nassau is clearly not that:

in addition, bear mccreary (the composer for the show) talks about it on his blog here

as for tuning… while i love them both and have complete faith in their combined ability to do a great many things, tuning a clavichord is not one of them. It would be pretty much impossible – it involves taking apart the instrument, and it’s almost always done by a professional. I suppose she would just need to find someone on Nassau who could do it.

thank you for the explanation (very clear!) and the link 😀

so what I have taken out of this is:

– James, at some point, apart from hunting for books and tea cups and the Urca’s treasure, has dragged in a tuner at gunpoint;

– ’James, no’;

– he has also tried stealing Davy Jones’s organ for Miranda.
