Senate Republicans just introduced an Obamacare repeal plan Democrats can’t stop

Essentially: the minority Dems in the Senate can only stop things by way of the filibuster, and so the GOP have introduced this repeal of parts of Obamacare via the reconciliation process. Reconciliation:

  1. Needs only a bare majority (51 votes in the Senate) to pass
  2. May only be used on matters that affect the budget.

So what parts of Obamacare touch the budget:

  • The individual mandate (tax penalty)
  • Subsidies for low income individuals to use on the marketplace (federal funds)
  • Medicaid expansion (federal funds)

So what is the GOP trying to repeal? The mandate and subsidies and Medicaid expansion, while leaving popular things like allowing children to stay on their parents’ insurance through age 26 and (most of) the ban on refusing coverage for people with pre-existing conditions! And what happens if they repeal the mandate?

Fewer young and healthy people spend their money on insurance, which means the pool of covered individuals gets older, sicker, and more risky/expensive to cover, and the insurance market fall into a death spiral, which means the ban on refusing coverage for pre-existing conditions is going to go away too to preserve the industry. Between that and killing Medicaid expansion (i.e., coverage for poor Americans):

The human consequences of this legislation are immense. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that it would rip insurance away from 22 million people, mostly people getting coverage from the Medicaid expansion and who rely on subsidies in the insurance marketplaces. (x)

Call your Reps and Senators. Raise Hell. This is the game on Obamacare.

Reblogging to answer the question: But why would the GOP want to take away people’s health insurance and, consequently, their health care??? It’s. About. Money.

The Tax Policy Center estimates that people making over $700,000 a year would pay somewhere in the neighborhood of $33,000 less in taxes each year. So if you’re curious to understand how much the GOP and the rich in this country value the lives of the poor and the sick, it’s definitely LESS than their ability to buy another BMW 2 series.

Repealing Obamacare gives the rich an instant tax cut and fucks over the poor, the middle class, and the sick.

This is the game on Obamacare.

Please.

Call your Reps and Senators. Raise Hell.

12Jan:  They’re not even pretending to preserve the most important and most popular aspects of Obamacare anymore:  last night, the Senate GOP on a straight party line vote, voted to kill:

  • Protections for ~27% of Americans with pre-existing conditions
  • The Children’s Health Insurance Plan (CHIP)
  • Ability for young adults to stay on their parents’ insurance until age 26
  • Required coverage of contraception
  • Medicaid expansion to ensure more low-income Americans have access to healthcare

The House is expected to take up the measure on Friday, although there were signs that disparate groups of House Republicans were concerned about it.

Moderates said they may oppose the measure because they are nervous about starting the repeal without a replacement plan.

Call your Reps. PARTICULARLY if your Rep is a non-hard-right Republican.

Hi, this is [yourname] calling from [city/town], and I want to strongly urge Representative [name] to vote against any attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act. [Doing so without a replacement plan is irresponsible and will take healthcare away from millions of Americans.]

Raise Hell.

I do want to point out that it wasn’t a straight party vote. Rand Paul voted “no”. As much as I dislike the man, if you’re repped by him make sure he knows that you support him voting no!

And if your Senator voted no make sure they know you support them!
