I DO care about jack! (AGAINST MY WILL 😡 [shaking my fists])

jack rackham is like a little smelly koala bear who is horribly dressed and has done all sort of things that have made me grumpy who I saw in a dumpster one day and was like “fine, you just stay there and roll around in the trash all you want lil Koala Jack >:(” only to walk another two miles and realize HE WAS CREEPING UP ON ME. and then he just never left and I got used to him being there.

which is to say…I roll my eyes and make mad faces at him a lot and he sure has #fuckedup, but I think his character is incredibly compelling! I love that he’s ridiculously smart but like, the furthest thing from untouchable. fjsdalfksdlf he gets shit on so much and he’s deeply aware of his own vulnerabilities and how other people see him as something small and not even worth their time. I mean, have you ever in your life heard a line that sums up a character quite so well and succinctly as “To be underestimated is an incredible gift” does for jack rackham?!? WHAT!!!! A GOOD!!! LINE!!! I think his relentless pursuit of building a name/legacy for himself could have really easily just bothered me or come across as like…narcissistic maybe? individualistic to the point of coldness?!…but this character and his backstory and the way he knows he’s wrongly perceived (but uses that to his advantage) just makes me GET IT. I think it’s fantastic.

also: when he delivers his “but great art has felled empires” line, and featherstone says “I have no idea what that means,” and jack is just like “no but I do so it’s okay don’t worry about it :’’)” fjskaldfjklsdfk I’M SO DELIGHTED BY THAT SIDE OF HIM. I love jack just being unbelievably intelligent and #deep and nobody understanding him and he’s just like “alright well. it’s cool. /I/ got it so. IT’S FINE EVERYONE. it’s fine.” and it doesn’t come across as uppity; it’s just like, when you’re super into something/nerdy about something you care about and everyone is just like “??!?!?!” and you’re like “……..no it’s fine I’ll just talk to myself about it :^)” HASHTAG RELATABLE.

probably a huge chunk of the reason I find jack interesting though is bc I just genuinely think toby schmitz is BRILLIANT. like…literally genius in this role. LIKE…I think all past and future portrayals of jack rackham are at a loss for not being played by toby schmitz >:) he constantly provides comic relief without ever becoming The Comic Relief™. he’s silly and snarky and dramatic and bumbling without ever being Clownish™. he makes bad baaaad decisions and can often be an asshole but (unlike with a character like silver) you never really question his sincerity. GOD, I JUST LOVE TOBY SCHMITZ. HE’S SO GOOD.

there’s a whole lot more I can say (I didn’t even touch on his relationships with anyone) but tl;dr I have some issues with him but as a character jack totally fascinates me! it took me a while to get there but YEAH. I’M INVESTED >:)
