reasons you should watch Black Sails

0stackcats0:

-Incredible women characters, including RL lady pirate Anne Bonny

-bisexual women (thus far, none among the body count)

-bisexual men (…one of them among the body count, though)

-bisexuality not fetishised even though sex scenes are often graphic

-polyamory (a m/f/f relationship and a m/m/f one) also portrayed as normal, not scandalised or played for laughs; characters learn and grow closer from the relationships instead of being played off against each other for drama

-high production values

-ships. like, literal ships

-gritty, tightly plotted, political and ideological pirate stories

-treasure

-Long John Silver, Billy Bones, and Captain Flint among real life pirates such as Charles Vane and Jack Rackham

-historical nods

-dark humour

-all characters well-rounded and receive development as the story progresses

-historically appropriate homophobia handled with grace

-historical race issues handled with grace, as far as this white person can tell

-… did I mention pirates

eye candy for everyone. Literally everyone.

sex workers treated with respect narratively, given their own plot lines and motivations

did we mention that the story literally would not exist without one of the polyamorous relationships? Like – no relationship, no story

historical accuracy on little details such as wigs and ships, although major liberties have been taken with the historical fate of several pirates (Charles Vane and Ned Low, for starters)

Female characters get the same leeway to make mistakes as men with no more judgment than the men get.

If you love politics, you will love this show. Pirates depicted as real, intelligent people with all of the conniving and scheming that goes along with that, not just a bunch of drunken idiots.
