I never realized that not everyone uses “among” and “amongst” interchangeably until an editor fixed it in a manuscript of mine and now I’m on a downward spiral of self doubt into grammatical hell as I become hyper aware of its every use.

There is no difference and apparently the editor was wrong to “correct” it but according to the Internet “amongst” is somewhat rarer and may even be archaic??

Is amongst maybe a more British use? I certainly use amongst more than among

This is gonna sound weird, but somehow to me among conveys belonging whereas amongst implies that something’s out of place. Just a weird personal thing.
